British Values
At Barden, we promote the fundamental British values through our school life, our curriculum and enrichment activities. This helps to support the spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of our pupils. Through doing so, we intend to prepare our pupils for life in British society throughout their school years and beyond.
The British values are:
- Democracy
- Rule of law
- Mutual respect
- Tolerance of all different faiths and cultures
- Individual Liberty
How are the British Values implemented?
The British Values are implemented through our school life, our curriculum and enrichment opportunities within school. Mutual respect is something which is both taught and modelled through the school curriculum, school expectations and behaviour. Children are taught to respect and show tolerance for all religions, beliefs and cultures through learning about and celebrating a range of religious festivals. We have had some incredible celebrations for Eid, Christmas and Easter, just to name a few! The Nest @ Barden also joined in with Diwali celebrations at a local specialist school. We also take part in marking key events in British society and history, such as Remembrance Day.
Our school council also introduces pupils to democracy, the rule of law and individual liberty and how this plays a part in our society. The school council plays an important part in our school life with representatives from each year group meeting to discuss ideas and decisions within school. We also continue to involve pupil voice, including developing ways for our non-verbal pupils to express their opinions. This has been achieved by creating alternative communication methods, such as communication boards.
The British Values are also taught across our curriculum to ensure that our pupils have a good understanding of each of the values within the national curriculum. In addition to this, pupils can take part in a range of enrichment activities, such as the debate team.
